Actors Help for Building Your Team
Building your team.
One of the most important pieces to becoming famous is building a team of people that have your best interest in mind. Rob Tencer says: "Your team should consist of the following: Your parent's support, manager, agent, entertainment lawyer, and an acting coach (or acting classes)." Because publicists don't work on percentages, they will be costly if you are not a working actor, making money. So, unless you're wealthy, and your goal is to become an actress and not a socialite, then celebrity and socialite publicist Rob Tencer says: "wait until you're working and making money, before getting a publicist." Your team should consist of the following: Your parent's support, manager, agent, entertainment lawyer, and an acting coach (or acting classes). Do not think you are going to get Angelina Jolie's or Keira Knightley or any other hot A-lister's agent or manager when you're just starting. If your team is getting you where you want to be, then stick with them. As you get more work, or a bigger agent or manager discovers your work and wants to sign you, Rob Tencer recommends having some loyalty. He reminds you that you have worked with your team successfully, and you can trust them. How can you trust a person so quickly, whom represents so many others competing with you for the same jobs? It's your decision, and that's why Rob Tencer makes the following list of agents available for you. I think there might be a couple modeling agencies as well. If you see any outdated information, please send us an email.

Top 10 College movies of all time - whats missing?
In an attempt to get a younger audience to my helpful blog of How-to's and Who to contact to become famous, I found the following list of Top 10 college movies of all time, and to my suprize, it does not include "my favorite college movie of all time". My favorite college movie is "The Real Genius". The list below seems to have been created in 2004, so maybe the best is yet to come.

Hollywood filmmakers have been telling us for years that college isn't just about getting an education. YOUNG MONEY took note and compiled a list of some of the best college-themed movies ever made.
1) Old School: "All the fun of college. None of the education." A trio of thirty-something guys who start an off-campus frat house in order to hang out with the college crowd should make for a creepy movie. Instead, three comedic actors, each with their own way of playing a scene, make this movie great. That plus Frank the Tank's streaking across the quad, angry "earmuff" tirades and KY wrestling.
Director: Todd Phillips
Stars: Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn
2) Animal House: Set in 1962, this screwball comedy is raunchy, highly inappropriate, and it's all Bluto Blutarsky's (John Belushi) fault. The madcap adventures of the Delta House fraternity, a motley crew on "double-secret probation," are sparked by their eligibility for the draft, threats from the dean, and constant derision from the snootier fraternities.
Director: John Landis
Stars: John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Kevin Bacon
3) Good Will Hunting: Twenty-year-old Will is a janitor (at MIT) from working-class South Boston. He spends most of his time with fellow blue-collar friends at the neighborhood bar, occasionally spouting obscure historical references, thanks to a photographic memory. It's the movie that launched Matt & Ben mania, and let's face it, Boston accents aside, it's pretty darn good.
Director: Gus Van Sant
Stars: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver
4) Scent of a Woman: This award-winning "dramedy," centers on the coming-of-age story of Charlie, a prep-school student (hey, it's almost college) who spends a hedonistic weekend in New York with a blind, bitter, former Army officer. There are a million reasons to see this film, including the best movie name ever for a troubled hero: Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade.
Director: Martin Brest
Stars: Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnell, Gabrielle Anwar, Philip Seymour Hoffman
5) Rules of Attraction: During a semester at the ultra-expensive Camden College, a sexual triangle develops between Sean Bateman (yes, Patrick's brother) the all-American hottie who deals drugs on the side, Paul Owen, who's bisexual, and Paul's ex-girlfriend, Lauren. Everyone's pining for, lusting after, and trying to lure the other players into bed. The film features sex, drugs, and a mediocre soundtrack reminding us, "There Are No Rules."
Director: Roger Avary
Stars: James Van Der Beek, Ian Somerhalder, Shannyn Sossamon, Eric Stoltz
6) PCU: In the mid-90s, an anti-political correctness comedy was long overdue. Enter this parody about a campus too "PC" for its own good. Every "group" is represented in the worst possible light, down to feminists in Eddie Vedder flannel. In the end, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic step in to set spirits free, with help from the two Dave's. "Flunk ‘em if they can't take a joke."
Director: Hart Bochner
Stars: Jon Favreau, Jeremy Piven, Chris Young, Megan Ward
7) Higher Learning: Malik (high school track star), Kristin (middle-class Orange County girl), and Remy (quiet kid from Idaho) embark on their freshman semester at fictitious Columbus University. They encounter the normal adolescent problems, as well as serious prejudice, intolerance, racism and sexism among the student body. While this isn't a portrait of the average college experience, the story is well crafted, and the climax starkly realized.
Director: John Singleton
Stars: Omar Epps, Kristy Swanson, Michael Rapaport
8) Revenge of the Nerds: The movie promo boasts "It's Time for the Odd to Get Even." The guys from Delta Fraternity were dirty, but the Nerds (in much the same predicament as Belushi's gang), are neatniks. And where one revenge plot was roughly enacted, this group utilizes high-tech warfare against the jocks of the Alpha Beta Fraternity. Key scene: the only-in-the-80's synthesized, hair-gelled, rock-out. A story that appeals to the dork in all of us.
Director: Jeff Kanew
Stars: Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Ted McGinley, Timothy Busfield
9) With Honors: Who says Harvard students don't have a heart? In this oft-funny tearjerker, some befriend a homeless man, and discover that they aren't teaching him half as much as they're learning. Makes the point that book-smarts aren't much without a real world application, explaining the difference between a degree and an education.
Director: Alek Keshishian
Stars: Joe Pesci, Brendan Fraser, Moira Kelly, Patrick Dempsey
10) Back To School: A fun loving millionaire enrolls in college in order to convince his disillusioned son not to drop out. Wild parties, extreme pool diving sequences and general insanity ensues as a result. Funny film shows us that the chance to attend college is not to be taken for granted. The late Sam Kinison also turns up in a hilarious scene as a Vietnam veteran turned angry professor.
Director: Alan Metter
Stars: Rodney Dangerfield, Sally Kellerman, Keith Gordon, Robert Downey Jr.

Protecting Your Online Reputation on Facebook and Myspace.
By Lauren Cooper, Indiana University Resource Center
In the spirit of a drunken friendship, a poster shows a college student helping his friend do a beer bong. It's tacked to bulletin boards in the Indiana University Kelley School of Business among the summer sublease fliers and internship program ads, yet warrants attention more than any other. On the bottom in bold black letters, the poster asks a pointed question:
What does your Facebook say about you?
With many more recruiters screening potential candidates through Internet searches, career counselors are advising students to edit their online personas. Eighty-three percent of executive recruiters revealed they use search engines when making hiring decisions, according to a 2007 survey conducted by ExecuNet. Forty-three percent reported eliminating a candidate based on what they've found.
The same goes for social networking sites like Myspace.
"For the past few months, we have seen an exponential increase in the number of employers who are gaining access to social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, to see what they can learn about candidates there, as well," Patricia Rose, the director of Career Services at the University of Pennsylvania, cautions students through a MP3 on her office's Web site.
Any graduate of a university can use an alumni e-mail account to gain access to that school's network. Recruiters also hire current students to do the snooping for them.
"I have spoken to employers who are doing exactly that," Rose said.
By getting into interview mode, doing searches of your own, putting positive information on the Web and knowing what employers don't want to see, you're boosting your odds of landing a job. Avoid getting "poked" and find out what recruiters really want to see when they click on your profile.
GET INTO INTERVIEW MODE
When job searching, it's important that your online persona reflects the professional you want employers to know.
"Be selective for [Facebook] categories like interests, about me and work experience," Fitch said. "Certain pictures or wall posts - all of that can be information you don't really want an employer to know."
That doesn't just apply to Facebook; make sure all aspects of your online persona portray you as a professional.
"Cleaning up your profile is like what we told students before the Internet: change your voicemail message if you're expecting a call from a potential employer," said Tom Fitch, the director of Career Services at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. "You just have to be in that mindset during the interview process."
THE GREAT UNKNOWN
Putting prospective job candidates' names into a search engine is commonplace.
"Beat them to the punch by Googling yourself," Rose said.
If you find incriminating information, look into having it taken down from the site.
"At the very least though, you should be aware of what the Internet reveals of your past and be ready to address it should it come up," Rose said.
BE PROACTIVE
Now that you know recruiters surf cyberspace to learn more about you, take control of your online reputation. Buy a domain name that most closely matches your full name, said Robyn Greenspan, a senior editor at ExecuNet. A personal Web site that will come up easily in a search is a great place to list community service, awards for leadership or writing and other things you're proud of that might not go on a resume. Greenspan followed her own advice and purchased one for her 18-year-old nephew last week.
"When a recruiter Googles [your name], they see that you've demonstrated initiative and that you're proactive about managing your online reputation," Greenspan said. "If 43 percent of applicants are being eliminated for negative information, imagine when they Google you and find positive information. That will increase your chances exponentially."
In fact, 70 percent of recruiters said finding positive information on the Web would increase an applicant's chances of getting the job, according to the ExecuNet survey.
TIME TO SHINE
So rather than setting your privacy controls to the hilt , erasing every mention of your name on the Web and untagging every photo, make the search results work in your favor.
Your profile can even be like a resume, Fitch said.
LaToya Evans, a junior studying journalism at the University of North Carolina, keeps her Facebook profile open to everyone in her network and lists past internships with magazines such as "Glamour" and "Vogue."
She also posts personal information, like involvement with her sorority, that she loves the book, "The Devil Wears Prada" and even a confession of obsession with stiletto heels.
"It's nice to keep things on your profile that make people understand you're not a workaholic," she said.
Employers are looking for well-rounded applicants. Social networking sites are also good places to list clubs and activities you're involved in and link to work you've done.
Andrea Zimmerman, a junior at Drake University, included a link on her Facebook account to her college's online magazine, which she edits.
"The Web is an opportunity to showcase what might make you the better fit within a company's culture," said Mark Brostoff, an associate director of the Undergraduate Career Services office at the IU Kelley School of Business.
Posting photos of your community service, work with a dance marathon or Greek life activities show involvement and enterprise, Brostoff said. Social sites can also show your networking capabilities.
KEEP IT TO YOURSELF
Yet, there are some things that are better left unsaid. When it comes to sharing religious and political views, Brostoff advises keeping it to a minimum.
"You wouldn't talk religion or politics at an interview or cocktail party," he said.
If you like to blog, especially on controversial topics, or just to blow off steam, don't use your full name, Greenspan said. It's best to use only your first name or a nickname.
"Create distance between your personal persona that may not be completely professional and your professional persona," Greenspan said. "Don't connect anything to your name that you don't want to end up on the cover of a newspaper."
Sites like archive.org already log information as far back as 15 years ago, she said. Your online persona will come back to haunt you, Rose warns.
The Kelley School of Business, which made Business Week's top 20 undergraduate business programs, warns its students that everything on the Web is public.
"Anyone could easily cut and paste a photo or your profile and e-mail it," Brostoff said. "It's never private or confidential."
But remember that if you want to post information that you're proud of yet think it's something an employer might not like, you may need to consider if that's the company for you, Fitch said.
"If you have listed on your MySpace that you're a liberal Democrat and involved in certain organizations, a company like Halliburton might decide that person isn't a good fit," Greenspan said. You might decide the same thing.
Know that recruiters are looking for sincere candidates.
"Recruiters have reported finding everything from misstated facts on a resume to criminal records to hobbies such as, ‘I like to drink,'" Greenspan said. "Due to increasing scrutiny on companies, they're looking for honesty and integrity."
Students, like Zimmerman, are skeptical about being checked on, but said, "I guess it's better to be safe than sorry."

I Got It Cheaper At... This is all about smart consumerism. We can't deny that we are consumers but at least we can be crafty about it! Tell us where you've found your best deals on anything from clothes to a discman to bus tickets!
Pop-Up Culture: Tell us abou all aspects of popular culture including books, art, magazines, movies, TV, video games, and websites. You might write a review, comment on trends, interview authors or actors or write about anything else you can think of.
Letters From Our Local Correspondents: Tell us what's going on in your part of the country. From funny and light-hearted local fairs and weird contests to funky news stories and groundbreaking stuff . If there's an issue getting a lot of media coverage where you live, give us your perspective.
In Your Words: (500 words) This is personal journalism. Have you had an experience in your life that's unique, or that you think others will find interesting? Tell us about it.
Where to send it:
- writing should be submitted on disk or by e-mail in text format (with an ending of .txt)

How-to write for TEEN MAGAZINE
Readership: Girls, 10 - 15
TEEN magazine does not accept unsolicited submissions of nonfiction - though they will accept queries. Unless you happen to be close friends with Zac Efron or Jesse McCartney (numbers 1 and 2 in the WINTER issue's "Hollywood's Hot 50 Countdown" article), you probably won't be writing any features for TEEN. The bulk of their nonfiction covers celebrity topics and therefore would not be applicable for most freelance writers. For noncelebrity topics, TEEN editors say they aren't really looking for new subjects, but new approaches for familiar topics of interest to young teens and tweens. This Winter issue includes some DIY decorating crafts and one or two articles that could hint at some freelance potential -- remember, if these give you ideas, all nonfiction must be queried first.
WHAT THEY WANT:
Fiction: 1000 words. TEEN fiction can be sent unsolicited. Most fiction is written in first person. TEEN is interested in romance and inspirational (not religious) fiction. Inspirational fiction is defined by being upbeat and positive. No science fiction, no historical, no religious.
Nonfiction: 800 words. Informational and how-to.

ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC ISSUE
Contents:
TEEN
Winter 2006
For this look, I'm going to focus on the potential freelance content and skip lightly over star crushes and fashion photo essays.
CELEB STUFF -- lots of short pieces about celebrities. Also includes suggestions for copying celebrity "looks."
MOVIES -- Very short reviews of new movies that could interest teens and tweens, and new releases to DVD.
Music -- Again, very short reviews of CDs...includes reviews by one of Teen's interns.
Books -- New books targeting teen/tween girls.
CELEB -- a longish section of celebrity interviews and articles. These are very worth reading to find out what interests teens/tweens. Sadly, I didn't even know who many of the Celebrity Hot Guys were! Interestingly, several of the articles were related to books. An author writing about body language analyzed the body language of celebrity photos. An author writing about what your favorite foods show about your personality, analyzed the ice cream favorites of some of the cast of WHISTLER, and an author writing about dreams, interpreted some star dreams. TEEN also had an HGTV designer talk about what clothing color choices say about your personality (and again, celebrities were used as the "model" for each color).
GUY GUIDE -- includes a quiz about what "guy behavior" means, tv shows suggested for "homework" on understanding guys, and FAQ of weird guy behavior. Also includes a quiz to get your guy to take, a round-up of gross things guys do, and a mini-fact about brains. Plus, a "what his jeans tell you" piece.
MAKE OVER YOUR LIFE -- quick changes to make you feel really different. Includes breaking bad habits, tuning in to news or reading good books, changing your cell phone ring, getting new tunes, and better computer organization.
QUIZ -- Can You Keep A Secret. Mostly focused on knowing when it's okay to tell a secret, and how to avoid being a gossip.
FALSE FRIENDS -- Types of "bad friends" and how to deal with it. Includes things like friends who are users, troublemakers, bossy, clingy, or guy crazy.
BORN TO BE -- The effect of Birth order on personality and friendships.
BAD FOR YOU BOYS -- Dealing with crushes on inappropriate guys.
TOUGH TALK -- How to handle tough communication situations like breaking up with a guy, confronting a friend, or asking your parents for things.
DARE TO DREAM QUIZ -- Practice dream interpretation.
FASHION & LOOKS. Mostly about products. Hairstyles, cold weather clothes, make-up. Also a short article on what to do with different hair problems (again, more products). A quiz on what your fashion preferences say about you.
GET REAL - these are more of the kinds of articles open to outside writers.
REAL-LIFE STORIES - a teen who works at a therapeutic horseback riding camp, a teen who went to Africa with UNICEF.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT (or maybe not). Food myths.
BFF - Best Female Friend stories.
DO YOU LIKE YOU quiz - looks at self-confidence and critical self-talk.
Ask Sophi - Dating and friendship questions.
Date or Fate? - A funny filll-in-the-blank story to share with a friend.
MORE. End of magazine hodge-podge.
DO IT YOURSELF, SISTA -- simple craft decor: pom-pom flowers, homemade journals, felt clutch, cushions from sweaters.
PARTY TIME. FICTION - a girl who learns to appreciate her big sister. First person. Lots of telling, not much specific detail.
SCOPESCOOP - horoscopes.
TECH GIRL -- computer games, mini media player, wii...all products.
WHY ME? -- Reader embarrassing stories.
OH, NO YOU DIDN'T. Celebrity photos turned into comics with joke captions.
FESS UP -- reader stories of bad things they've done.

Nonfiction: 800 words. Informational and how-to.
